Nonprofit Spotlight: "A Day at the Beach"

At Got'um Surfing, we believe the ocean should be a place where everyone has the opportunity to experience the joy of surfing.
That’s one of the reasons we’re proud to volunteer for "A Day at the Beach" with AccesSurf and Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy, a local non-profit program partnership dedicated to creating opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy the ocean through adaptive surfing and water activities.
The ocean has always had a special way of bringing people together. Out in the water, everyone shares the same simple experience: the feeling of catching a wave, being surrounded by the ocean and experiencing the freedom that comes with surfing.
Through our volunteer work with Accessurf and Kahākūkahi, we’ve had the opportunity to share that feeling with others and be part of something much bigger than a surf lesson.
For us, volunteering isn’t just about giving our time. It’s about showing up, being present, and creating opportunities for people to experience the connection that the ocean can provide.
Together, we are creating an inclusive and welcoming opportunity for people of all abilities to connect with the ocean and our Maui community.
This opportunity to serve a greater purpose reminds us to reconnect with what truly matters and to recognize the deeper meaning behind what we do.
Ea is a powerful Hawaiian word that carries many layers of meaning: life, breath, air, sovereignty, and independence. To us, it represents the spirit of living with intention and remembering that the ocean can be a place of healing, freedom, and belonging.
Every day on the water brings different stories and different challenges. Sometimes it’s a first wave. Sometimes it’s a smile after getting back on the board. Sometimes it’s simply sharing time in the ocean with others. Those moments may seem small, but they can have a lasting impact.
We feel incredibly grateful to be able to contribute our ʻike (knowledge), our time, and our passion for surfing to these programs.
Mahalo to everyone who works to make the ocean accessible to all. Whether you’re already familiar with adaptive ocean activities or it’s your first time volunteering, there’s a place for you.
