Giving Back to Ukumehame

At our surf school, surfing is about more than catching waves, it's about building a connection with the ocean and the ʻāina that makes this place so special. Ukumehame has given us countless memorable days in the water and it's our kuleana to give back.
This summer, our Got'um Surfing team came together to help restore our coastline by planting native Hawaiian plants at our home break. These plants do more than beautify the shoreline, they help stabilize the soil, reduce erosion, provide habitat for native birds and insects and strengthen the health of our coastal ecosystem.

We met on a beautiful Saturday morning after our last day of Keiki Summer Surfing. Trading surfboards for shovels and dirt, we planted Ti leaf, Milo, Naupaka and Pā'ū o Hi'iaka. We talked stories about the importance of native species and how restoring the landscape helps protect both the reef and the coastline for future generations.
There was plenty of hard work, but also lots of laughter, stories, and time spent together. Days like this remind us that caring for Maui isn't one person's job, it's a kākou thing. The most important kuleana we all share.
Just as we learn to adapt and adjust with the tides while surfing, we also learn to flow with nature when we give back to the ʻāina. When the storms come, and they will because they always do, we know we can rebuild, together. We look forward to tending to this project and we encourage all of you reading this to stop by if you can, mālama ʻāina.
More Than a Surf Lesson
When people take surf lessons with Got'um Surfing, they're becoming part of a community that values respect for the ocean, the land, and the people who call Maui home. We believe every surf session should leave us with a deeper appreciation for this incredible place.
Giving back to Ukumehame is just one way we live that philosophy. Whether it's planting native vegetation, organizing beach cleanups, or encouraging responsible ocean practices, we're committed to doing our part to mālama ʻāina.
